Barri Vell

The old town climbs the hill on the east bank of the Onyar. Staying here puts you on foot from the cathedral and its grand staircase, the alleys of the Jewish Call, the Arab Baths and the church of Sant Feliu. You can walk the city walls at sunset and come down for dinner on the Rambla de la Llibertat by the river.

There are lots of slopes and steps, and cars can barely get in. If you have large suitcases or are travelling with older people, ask about access beforehand.

Mercadal

Across the river, over the red Peixateries Velles bridge built by Gustave Eiffel's workshop, is the Mercadal. It is a flat district with Plaça de la Independència and its arcaded terraces, shops and the Lleó market. The colourful houses of the Onyar are right opposite. Good if you want to be next to the old town without climbing hills. It is also handy for shopping and has good cafés for breakfast.

Eixample and the station

The newer district, with wider, modern streets, surrounds the train station, where high-speed trains to Barcelona and France stop. It is a good base if you arrive by train or car, as parking is easier than in the centre. La Devesa park, with its huge plane trees, is close by and a pleasant place for a walk with children. You can walk to the old town from here, and it is convenient for driving out to the Costa Brava.

Vall de Sant Daniel

Behind the Barri Vell, next to the monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, opens this green, quiet valley. You are away from the bustle but a short walk from the old town. It suits those looking for calm, nature and walking or cycling routes.
