Part Alta

The old town occupies the highest part of the city and still follows the layout of Roman Tarraco. Sleeping here puts you next to the cathedral, Pla de la Seu, Plaça del Fòrum and Plaça de la Font, with the town hall and its terraces. The Archaeological Walk along the walls and the Roman circus are a few steps away.

It suits those who come for the history and want to go out for dinner without taking transport. Many streets are pedestrianised and steep, and most places to stay are small.

Best-rated in this area: H10 Imperial Tarraco 4 Sup, with a score of 9.0 from 6,258 reviews.

Rambla Nova and the Eixample

The Rambla Nova is the city's main avenue. It starts at the BalcΓ³ del Mediterrani, with views of the sea and the amphitheatre, and is lined with shops, cafΓ©s and hotels of all sizes. The Central Market is nearby, good for local produce. From here you can walk up to the Part Alta and down to the train station by the sea. A convenient option for business trips and short stays.

Best-rated in this area: Pigal, with a score of 9.0 from 3,216 reviews.

El Serrallo

Tarragona's fishermen's quarter clusters around the fishing harbour, with the fish market and a long row of fish and seafood restaurants. It has a village feel quite different from the centre and is quiet at night. It is an easy walk from the Rambla Nova or the station.

Best-rated in this area: Espinach Port Serrallo, with a score of 8.6 from 1,254 reviews.

El Miracle and L'Arrabassada

El Miracle beach lies at the foot of the amphitheatre, next to the railway, and is the closest to the centre. To the east are L'Arrabassada and Platja Llarga, with apartments and roomier residential areas. It is the area for combining beach and monuments in the same stay.
