Liked: The front door locked, heat seemed to work, electricity and WiFi were fine and shower was passable but very low pressure on the nozzle. There was no instruction on where to park so we had to guess but the property is easy to find and near to many hikes, sites and notable towns.

Disliked: This property was quite tired. Paper thin walls, broken tile in the bathroom, dirty floors (under bed crumbs and dirt and pieces of broken ceramic), and the bedding even smelled like it hadn’t been washed between stays. The beds were not comfortable and were very squeaky even when you were just turning over. The shared common kitchen was absolutely filthy. Soaked, grimey dish towels, crumbs and food splatters abound and even the “unused” dishes were clearly not washed well. I cannot rate this place any higher unfortunately.

    The basics and nothing more

Liked: The was a separate kitchen with facilities to cook and store food.

Disliked: No staff on site (when booking I has been asked to estimate a check-in time, which indicated someone would be there). I received a message while I was on my way to the hostel, saying “no towels provided.” I wasn’t aware of this when making the booking. (The next hostel I stayed at provided towels). The bedroom didn’t have a chair, nor kettle, nor TV. All of these things were provided at the next hostel I went to in John o’ Groats. There wasn’t even a two gang socket by the double bed, so I could either plug in the bedside lamp or my phone charger. This was really basic hostel accommodation for single travellers, couples or families. No attempt was made to make this a comfortable experience.
