Disappointing - in desperate need of a deep clean and general maintenance

Liked: There were very few positives to our stay at The Victorian House. The accommodation is conveniently located close to York city centre and is on a relatively quiet street. A free parking permit is provided, and we were fortunate enough to park virtually outside the property. The mattress and pillows on the double bed were also very comfortable, although they were extremely soft, which may not suit everyone.

Disliked: As soon as you enter, there is a strong musty/fusty smell. The numerous bookcases filled with old books seem to contribute to the dusty atmosphere. We found cobwebs above the dining room door and bookshelves. The property generally felt very tired and poorly maintained. there was paint peeling from the walls and scuff marks on the stairs. The kitchen was disappointing, with a strange assortment of old cutlery, some of which was clearly past its useful life. One spoon had badly scratched coating on the back, and the frying pan was in a disgusting condition and should be replaced. We also found tea bags that were six months past their best-before date. The bathroom window was propped open with a plastic container and appeared potentially faulty. The blind also seemed broken and couldn't be raised. The downstairs toilet towel was grey and fraying. The cleanliness was the biggest concern. On our final night, the TV remote fell down the side of a sofa. Moving the sofa revealed a floor covered in dust and rubbish. I then had to lift the sofa-bed section to retrieve it, and the floor underneath was also covered in dust and rubbish. The bathroom and toilet also have clear windows/glass panels, which provided very little privacy. Overall, the property is in desperate need of a deep clean and significant maintenance. The location, parking and comfortable bed were positives, but at £160 per night, we did not feel this accommodation represented good value for money.

Liked: Location is great, really convenient for the centre of York but on a quiet side road. The bathroom and kitchen were clean. The little courtyard outside is lovely. Parking was easy and free with the permit provided.

Disliked: The double bed was truly bad. The mattress is ancient and should be replaced urgently. The double room smelt of mouldy books and dust. It is not suitable for anyone with a dust allergy. Everything was just worn out and scruffy. We left a day early rather than spend another night in that room. As none of it was a quick fix, we chose not to contact the agent when we were there.

Beautiful place close to the town centre

Liked: The property, was comfortably and easy to walk into town centre took about 7-10mins from the house. The rooms where all lovely and I’m a big book person so all the books around the house was a nice touch

Disliked: The kids didn’t like the dolls in the room or the rocking house they were slightly frightened of them.

Comfortable character house, close to town and with permit parking

Liked: The location was excellent - in a quiet street and easy walking distance to the town centre

Disliked: It was great to have an outside area at the back of the house especially in the hot weather, but the table and chairs needed a very good clean and the garden area a tidy up. It let down the very well-presented house.
