What the Loire Valley is like
It is the valley of France’s longest river, between Orléans and Angers, famous for its Renaissance châteaux such as Chambord, Chenonceau and Amboise. It is a World Heritage Site.
Which area to choose
Tours is the most practical base, with trains and plenty of hotels. Amboise and Blois have their own châteaux and charming hotels. Saumur and Angers, to the west, combine châteaux, vineyards and lower prices.
When to go
April to October, when the châteaux and gardens are open all day. In summer some châteaux put on sound and light shows.
Getting around
The TGV reaches Tours from Paris in just over an hour. There are buses between châteaux in season, but a car or a bike on the Loire cycle route gives you more freedom.
