What the Black Forest is like
It is a range of rolling mountains and fir forests in south-west Germany, between the Rhine and Lake Constance. It is the land of cuckoo clocks, cherry gateau and farmhouses with huge roofs, with waterfalls such as Triberg and lakes such as Titisee.
Where to stay
Freiburg is the best city base for the south, with trains to the villages. Baden-Baden, in the north, is the spa option with elegant hotels. To sleep in the forest itself, Titisee, Hinterzarten and the villages around have spa hotels and guesthouses.
When to go
In summer it is for walking and cycling; in autumn the woods change colour, and in winter there is skiing on the Feldberg and Christmas markets. Many hotels’ guest cards give free public transport.
Getting around
There are trains from Freiburg and Baden-Baden, but to tour the villages and the Black Forest High Road a car is easiest. The nearest airports are Basel-Mulhouse, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Stuttgart.
