Where to stay in the Cyclades

What the Cyclades are like

They are some thirty inhabited islands in the middle of the Aegean, arranged in a circle around sacred Delos. They share white houses, blue-domed churches, windmills and the north wind, the meltemi, but each has its own character: Santorini is the volcanic caldera, Mykonos the party island, Naxos the largest and greenest, and Milos the island of rock beaches.

Which island to choose

For a first trip, most people combine Santorini with Mykonos, Naxos or Paros. Naxos and Paros are cheaper and family-friendly, an hour apart by ferry. Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros are quieter, and Ios is the young party island. Amorgos is for walking and switching off.

When to go

From June to September everything is open and the sea is warm, but July and August are expensive and windy. May, June and late September are the best time. In winter many hotels and boats stop.

Getting around

Ferries leave Piraeus and Rafina, near Athens, and link the islands; book ahead in summer. Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Milos have airports with flights from Athens, and the first two also have direct flights from much of Europe in season.
