It is the area of hills between Florence and Siena where Chianti Classico wine is made. It has vineyards, olive groves, woods, castles and stone villages linked by winding roads.
Which village to choose
Greve in Chianti, in the north, is the gateway from Florence. Radda and Castellina, in the middle, are walled villages among the wineries. Many travellers prefer an agriturismo in the countryside, with a pool and its own wine. Siena, to the south, has the most choice.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best times, with the grape harvest in September and October. Summer is hot, but agriturismo pools help.
Getting around
You need a car: there is no train and buses are infrequent. Florence and Siena are less than an hour from almost all of Chianti.
