Liked: I heard the spa was nice

Disliked: A rather disappointing first night of our honeymoon. We were traveling from the West Coast of the US to Malta, with Amsterdam serving as a sensible stopping point after a very long journey. We'd booked a double bed, which seemed a reasonable enough request for two newlyweds. Instead, we arrived to find two twin beds. When we asked about it, the gentleman at reception explained that double beds were "subject to availability." Fair enough, I suppose, except he spoke about it as though this were a perfectly ordinary occurrence. Which begs the question: if this happens regularly, why not have more double rooms? Or, at the very least, stop allowing guests to book something the hotel apparently cannot reliably provide? There's something particularly absurd about traveling halfway around the world to begin your honeymoon, only to discover that sleeping next to your new spouse is subject to availability. We weren't expecting champagne, rose petals, or any grand romantic gesture. Just the bed we'd reserved. One would think a hotel could manage that modest task. Apparently not.
