Exceptional
Liked: Clean and well maintained
Disliked: Location but away from city centre
Great location but let down by an ant problem and cold spa
Liked: The location of the property was excellent and the hotel is beautiful. Most of the receptionists are fantastic.
Disliked: The hotel obviously has an ant problem based on the reaction of the receptionists when we kept on reporting ants in our room. Whilst they apparently sprayed something, ants kept on coming. The receptionists were obviously aware. Don’t let them book you into room 203! We also had issues with the €8pp spa. It was sold to us as a warm pool but it was so cold, as was the spa itself. No where to get changed either. Very disappointing as it’s one of the main reasons we chose this hotel.
Liked: Nice hotel with good breakfast in a nice location within Porto. Friendly staff and a nice inner garden if the temperature is right.
Disliked: We had a bit of a smell in room 120. We accepted it, because we could open a window to the inner garden. But maybe somebody else can judge different. If you use the parking facilities that work together with the hotel, keep in mind that it takes 5,5 years to get there because of one-way traffic and only 5 minute walk back, once you got your car parked.
Liked: Excellent location! the room was spacious, large, and clean. The staff were friendly and welcoming.really
Liked: The staff were extremely friendly and helpful throughout the whole trip, it really made our holiday special
Ants nest and poor description of a balcony
Liked: The only real positive was the hotel's good location
Disliked: Very disappointing four-night stay. Unfortunately, our experience at Catalonia Porto was far below expectations. We raised with staff, several times about ants in the bathroom, including what appeared to be a nest in the shower area. Although housekeeping sprayed something around the shower, they simply rinsed it away afterwards and even used our towels to mop up, rather than addressing the root cause of the problem. The hotel clearly has a wider issue with ants, as they were also visible across the bar terrace throughout our stay. The room itself was nicely decorated, but we paid extra for a balcony and felt misled by what was provided. Rather than a usable balcony, it was little more than a narrow ledge with railings, that was also crawling with ants! What was most disappointing was the response from reception. Despite reporting the problem, staff seemed largely unconcerned and offered no meaningful solution. It is not what you expect when you're repeatedly cleaning up both live and dead ants in your bathroom during a holiday. Since checking out, I have been in contact with the hotel regarding these concerns. They advised that they took the matter seriously but were unable to see any ants themselves, I’ll let you decide from the photo. They also explained that the balcony was a "Portuguese balcony". While I appreciate the response, neither explanation changes the reality of our experience or the fact that we encountered ants every day of our stay. Had the nature of the balcony been made clearer when booking, we would not have chosen to pay extra for it. Overall, because of the persistent ant problem, the misleading balcony description, and the lack of any effective resolution, we would choose to stay elsewhere on our next visit to Porto.
