Where to stay in Northern Portugal
Porto
Porto is the main base: the Ribeira and the area around São Bento put the historic centre within walking distance, and Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river, has the port wine cellars. The airport is linked to the centre by metro.
Braga, Guimarães and Viana
Braga and Guimarães, less than an hour from Porto, have historic centres and small hotels. Viana do Castelo combines city and beach, and Ponte de Lima is one of the oldest towns in the country.
Douro valley
The Alto Douro wine region, with Peso da Régua and Pinhão, has quintas offering rooms among terraced vineyards. You get there by car, by train on the Douro line or by boat from Porto. The grape harvest, in September, is a very popular time.
