What the Serra de Tramuntana is like
It’s the mountain range that runs along the north-west of Mallorca, from Andratx to Pollença. It has mountains falling into the sea, terraces of olive trees and stone villages. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site as a cultural landscape.
Which village to choose
Sóller has the most hotels, the port and the wooden train to Palma. Valldemossa is known for the charterhouse where Chopin and George Sand stayed. Deià and Fornalutx are small and expensive, with boutique hotels. Pollença, in the north, is a good base for Cap de Formentor.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal for walking, for example on the Dry Stone Route (GR 221). In summer it’s hot and Sóller and Valldemossa are crowded.
Getting around
The mountain roads are narrow and winding. There are buses from Palma to the main villages and the Sóller train.
