Village life centres on Plaça de la Constitució, with the church of Sant Bartomeu and terraces under the plane trees. A few steps away is the station for the train that comes down from Palma through the mountains, and the Modernista museum of Can Prunera. Port de Sóller

The port fills an almost round, enclosed bay, with a promenade, a sandy beach and fish restaurants facing the water. The wooden tram links the port with the village centre, and boats to Sa Calobra and the north coast leave from the quay.

Fornalutx and Biniaraix

Fornalutx is a stone village of stepped streets, perched on the hillside with views of Puig Major. Biniaraix is an even smaller hamlet at the start of the gorge of the same name, one of the classic Tramuntana trails. Both are for people who want silence and to walk straight from the door. For dinner, Sóller is close by.

Deià and the Llucalcari coast

Along the coast road towards Valldemossa you reach Deià, with its ochre houses hanging above the sea. The writer Robert Graves lived here, and his house can be visited. From the village you can walk down to Cala de Deià, a pebble cove with very clear water. It is an option for couples’ getaways and for anyone with a car.

Country estates in the valley

Among orange groves and terraced olive trees there are farmhouses converted into places to stay. You need a car, but you gain a garden, a pool and quiet nights. Many are near the Dry Stone Route, the GR 221, which crosses the valley.
