Old town and the Charterhouse

The streets that climb and drop around the Charterhouse form a small, cobbled centre full of plants. Staying in the village lets you see it early, before the coaches arrive, and stroll at sunset through almost empty streets. The cafés on the square, the bakeries selling coca de patata and the bus stop down to Palma are all close at hand.

It is the place for couples and travellers who want to do everything on foot. Bear in mind that there are steps and slopes, and that you cannot park in the old town.

Estates in the valley

On the outskirts, among olive and almond trees and dry-stone terraces, there are old manor estates and farmhouses converted into places to stay. From them you see the village and the mountains, and at night all is silent. You will usually need a car, although some are within walking distance of the centre. Many have a pool and a vegetable garden, and suit families or groups looking for space and views of the Tramuntana.

Towards Miramar and Son Marroig

The road on to Deià runs along a balcony above the sea with viewpoints and isolated houses. Here are Miramar and Son Marroig, linked to Ramon Llull and Archduke Ludwig Salvator. Staying on this stretch keeps you close to the views of the north coast and the hiking routes down to the sea.

Port de Valldemossa

Down below, at the end of a narrow, winding road, Port de Valldemossa is a pebble cove with a few fishermen’s houses and a restaurant or two. There are very few places to stay. It is worth it if you want total isolation and do not mind driving that road every day. In winter and in bad weather it is very lonely, and in summer the cove fills with swimmers at midday.
