Lovely people, great location, charming hotel - would go back in a jiffy

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay in this moderate-sized hotel - Dave & Phil were both friendly, welcoming and down to earth. The old building has a charm about it that you don't get in chain hotels. Our room was basic but comfortable and clean - not too many furnishings so you don't have to check every nook and cranny to ensure nothing is left behind, but enough storage for clothing, shelves in the bathroom, touch-control bedside lamps (no scrabbling for the switch in the dark), the usual tea & coffee facilities complete with biscuits and a smart TV. Free parking is provided at the back of the hotel, and the car park is a good size. TIP: take the hotel's phone number with you so that you can phone when you arrive and ask them to lift the barrier - otherwise you will need to get out of the car and walk round to the entrance at the front to ask to be let in. There is a small lift if needed, and a bar with TV and outside balcony. We went out of season, so don't know whether breakfast and dinner are normally available in peak season, but they weren't while we were there. Dave recommended a little cafe just round the corner though, Gio's, where you can get a full english breakfast, bap or homemade sweet bake for a really good price, along with tea, coffee and iced drinks. They also serve lunch, but we didn't experience that. The breakfast did not disappoint. There are also plenty of restaurants both within a few minutes walk of the hotel and further out in the town if you don't mind walking a bit further (10-15 minutes). The beach and pier are a 5-8 minute walk, depending on your speed, reached by steps or by walking down the West Cliff Promenade. It's steep, so be ready for the walk back up...

Disliked: The mattress has had one too many people sitting on the edge of it - while it's comfortable enough in the middle, there is a tendency to slide if you get too close to the edge.
