There’s a Difference Between Historic Charm and Neglected Maintenance

    Liked: Location

Disliked: Very mediocre stay. We paid £78 for one night, and frankly, I don't think it was worth the money. The biggest issue was the bedroom window, which had approximately a 2 cm gap between the window and its frame, even when fully closed. Being on the top floor during winds of around 55 mph, the noise coming through was horrendous. I actually had to stuff the gap with toilet paper just to make the room bearable, which, remarkably, made a significant difference. Upon arrival, I asked the gentleman at reception whether there was a lift, having already read reviews mentioning the stairs. His response was simply, "No, we're an old hotel." Fair enough, I thought. Older buildings have their quirks. However, after climbing approximately four flights of stairs, we encountered an extremely loose and unstable banister just before reaching our floor. Having subsequently noticed that this exact issue has been raised repeatedly in previous reviews, it's concerning that it apparently remains unaddressed. The bathroom wasn't much better. The shower tray had no proper fascia or covering underneath, leaving exposed timber visible, and there was no running hot water from the bathroom sink. Other than these issues, the stay was reasonably pleasant. I'm not expecting a historic hotel to have all the conveniences of a modern building, and I'm perfectly happy to overlook a few aesthetic imperfections. But there's a difference between historic charm and neglected maintenance. You can reasonably excuse the absence of a lift by saying you're an old hotel. You cannot use the same excuse to justify poorly maintained facilities and potential health and safety hazards, particularly when guests have reportedly raised concerns before. Address these relatively straightforward issues, and the hotel could offer a much more enjoyable experience.

Liked: The hotel is in a wonderful location, just a few steps away from the sea. Before arriving, I requested a quiet and warm room. The lovely and friendly receptionist kindly took my request into consideration, and I really appreciated that. The room was indeed warm and quiet. The room had everything needed for a comfortable stay: hot water in the shower, an electric kettle, coffee, tea, sugar, biscuits, two cups and a mini fridge. The bed linen and towels were beautifully white and fresh. Overall, this is a good budget hotel in a fantastic location, offering good value for money. I would happily stay here again!

Disliked: There were just a couple of minor drawbacks: one of the pillowcases had some stains, and the old window frames could do with some renovation, as the paint was peeling in places.

Disliked: The bed wasn’t very long as a 6”4 human.
