We made the best of it but overall dissatisfied

    Liked: Hotel facilities

Disliked: We booked a self catering lodge and arrived to find we had actually been given a fairly standard hotel room.

Liked: Amazing beautiful ground with lots of history. Mountain views and large rooms. We stayed in the manor house which is located next to the palace. Our room was very big, comfortable, clean and very accommodating. The bathroom had a bath and a separate shower which was nice. It was a short walk to the village centre so no need to drive once you're there. We will be coming back as there are plenty of walks which we didn't get to do them all.

Stunning historic location with good facilities within walking distance to town

Liked: The location was beautiful and the lodge was nice and spacious. We enjoyed the pool/spa and dinner in the bar was delicious. In general, we had a lovely time and would recommend this place.

Disliked: Breakfast was very disappointing unless you liked a fried breakfast (which was good). There was limit alternatives and what was there was not refilled regularly. We had to ask for bread and fruit bowls were empty. The staff were lovely but were busy making coffees etc. Maybe a toaster and coffee machine would free them up a bit. I would say you get a better breakfast at a Premier Inn (for example). The room had dog hair all over the floor from previous guests. There was a vacuum cleaner, so not a massive issue.

Liked: Spacious rooms in the Manor. Bathtub was awesome with hot water. Views were great. Bed was comfy.

Disliked: There were makeup stains on the bedding but otherwise no issues. Could have used a better map to find the parking lot, but I'm admittedly specially challenged.

The apartment which we stayed in was very disappointing and not value for money

Liked: The apartment was spacious, and the bathroom – though not too well-appointed – covered all practical needs and was clean. The kitchen had a good kettle, toaster, coffee maker, oven, and microwave. The location of the apartments was in a quiet area of the estate.

Disliked: Although listed, the apartment didn't have a phone or dishwasher. Reception promised a phone the next morning but it never came during our five-day stay. The mattresses in the room were the most uncomfortable we had slept on and should have been replaced long ago. All the relaxing chairs in the room were best described as uncomfortable and bad for the back The two-seater settee should also have been replaced a long time ago. The curtains were scruffy and looked grubby. Cutlery and crockery was very limited - being just two of the most essential things. There was no bowl so if you wanted scramble eggs for breakfast, you needed to improvise. All this was definitely not what we expected from a luxury apartment. Shortly after arriving, I had to fold up and remove a large rug having the thickness of a bed blanket in the lounge area. This was a slip and trip safety hazard because there was no friction between it and the wooden floor and it kept rucking up and getting caught in our feet. An annoyance was the bedroom door which did not appear to be a fire door but had an automatic closure system fitted. So every time you needed to go into the bedroom for something, a considerable effort was required to open the door, then pull it open again to exit and ensure it didn't slam into you as you exited. There were no instructions for anything - microwave, recycling, towel rail which appeared to have a control unit at its base but seemed not to work anyway. We left three days early, having had enough experience of this – at best - basic accommodation.
