Fabulous
Great location and character
Liked: Outstanding location near the Fish Market and short walk into old town center, Burg and Markt. While in the old town, quite easy to park out front to load/unload since it is on side street. Great character of building and rooms. Comfortable and quiet. Large room with plenty of storage. Really quite an attractive and charming structure and you can't beat the location. We did not eat there so I cannot comment on the breakfast or other options.
Disliked: With old town character comes challenges. Big step up from street and obviously older rooms. While I liked the charm of our room with the beamed ceilings, I found the Euro style bathtub a challenge to enter/exit and use. It is built into a sloped ceiling and being over 6 foot tall this was awkward. Also BIG step up and over the tub wall so not exactly ideal for anyone with mobility issues. No curtain either so when using the wand it's a job to keep water from getting all over the bathroom. They do not have modern keycards with tap to lock/unlock and they only have on key per room, so like in the past you need to leave the key at the desk when coming/going. Not really an issue for us but worth noting.
Disappointing
Liked: The location was near perfect, in a quiet street close to the main market area. Reception staff on arrival was extremely helpful in providing luggage store and use of facilities hours before check-in time.
Disliked: We had stayed in a neighbouring 4 star hotel the night before and expected a similar standard. Sadly, this wasn't the case. The room we were given at the Jan Brito is in desperate need of a deep clean - dust on the inside of the desk lamp. The plastic concertina door (yes, plastic concertina door which would not look out of place in a 1* room) is sticky and grimy in places. The door itself has slipped out of the guide rail and doesn't close properly so the toilet can be seen from the bed and chairs set opposite. The radiators in the bedroom and bathroom are dusty. The blind and curtain in the bathroom are dirty and showing signs of mould. The veluxe windows in the high ceiling directly above the bed are covered in cobwebs. The windows themselves do not have blinds so be prepared to wake up at sunrise. The room is poorly ventilated - large quantities of condensation had formed on the lower window overnight. The window was difficult to open and opened inwards which meant accumulated condensation was then dripping onto the floor below. The rooms and doors are not soundproofed so anybody passing in the hallway and accessing nearby rooms can be heard. Given our experience of a local 4* hotel the night before, we were shocked that this space was also classed a 4* We spent a month on the road, touring France, Spain and Belgium staying in assorted accommodation from hostels to 4* hotels so feel adequately equipped to 'judge' star ratings. The Jan Brito in it's current state is not a 4* hotel.
