How to choose a hostel or a guesthouse
Hostal, pensión or hostel
In Spain a hostal or a pensión is a simple guesthouse with private rooms, often in a flat in the centre. A hostel (albergue) has mostly shared dorms with bunk beds, a shared kitchen and a backpacker atmosphere, although many also offer private rooms.
What to check before booking
Check whether the bathroom is private or shared, whether reception is open around the clock or you have to tell them your arrival time, and whether the building has a lift. In hostels, see whether there are lockers and whether the dorms are mixed.
