  Unique location in the Sassi

  Liked: Very welcoming hosts, Tiziana and Domenico, were helpful with booking walking tours and pointing out places of interest. Their rooms are uniquely located below a beautiful rock church, which gave it a sense of historic awe. The Panorama Room gifted us with views of the Sassi from early morning to evening, which were spectacular. There was ample room to relax, and a kitchen was also handy. Their breakfast is excellent, we particularly enjoyed the bruschetta and the best cappucinno! Tiziana is quite a ceramics artist and displays her craft.

  Best location and breakfast in Matera

  Liked: Location and breakfasts were phenomenal. The view from our window 🪟 surely the best in Matera and it has been a joy seeing it so many pictures we took of thus beautiful place. The perfect end to a wonderful trip

  A beautiful room, incredible views and genuinely lovely hosts. We only wish we’d stayed longer

  Liked: We had a lovely stay at La Corte Dei Pastori and honestly couldn’t fault it. Before we arrived, we had a few questions through Booking.com, and the owners were always quick to respond and really helpful. They helped us organise taxis and let us know the breakfast times, which we’d definitely recommend making time for. When we arrived, the owners met us at the taxi and showed us through to our room. We stayed in the Panorama Suite, which was beautiful. It had everything we needed for a comfortable few days away, while still retaining the character of the original cave structure. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the shower was great, but the highlight was undoubtedly the terrace. Sitting outside with a glass of wine and looking out over the Sassi of Matera was bliss. The location was ideal. We could enjoy those incredible views while still feeling right in the heart of the Sassi. The terrace and the room’s windows all looked out over the same view, so we never had to go far to appreciate it. It was also within easy reach of a great selection of restaurants and viewpoints, making it a perfect base for exploring Matera. Breakfast was a lovely experience too. The weather meant we had to eat indoors, but that didn’t take anything away from it. We started with breads and pastries, followed by a selection of small homemade courses brought out by the owners. Everything was delicious, and there was plenty to keep us going for our journey home. What really made the stay was how welcoming and thoughtful the owners were, alongside the beautiful room and its setting. We were sad to leave and would happily stay here again. If you’re visiting Matera, we’d definitely recommend La Corte Dei Pastori.

  Disliked: The only thing we didn’t like was having to leave. Matera was the end to a busy holiday travelling around Italy and we only stayed one night. We wish we’d stayed longer, next time we will be staying here and staying for at least two nights to fully enjoy the suit and Matera.
