Beautiful apartment in a beautiful town. You need to be clearer, upfront, about check in procedures

Liked: The apartment is in a great place, right within the walls and within a short walking distance to all restaurants. The facilities are very good, its a newly renovated apartment with a very comfortable bed (King Suite) and its a great base for exploring Volterra.

Disliked: Check in was stressful. We advised of our arrival time, as previously requested and we called when we arrived at the front door of the apartment but communication was tricky as we had no Italian and the gentlemen who answered the phone had no English. As the front door was open and the key to the King suite was in the door, we assumed he said it was ok to enter as no-one came to greet us. Later that evening we had received messages to Booking.com, messages to whatsapp and several phone calls from 2 different numbers. We had already gone out to dinner and no-one had come to the apartment for the previous couple of hours so we didn't know there was a problem. Once we were back in the apartment later that evening, we had more phone calls until around 11pm at night and it turned out we shouldn't have entered and we needed to go to the family restaurant to complete check in. The result was a stressful evening, several stressful, incoherent conversations until we finally spoke with someone who had some English. All of that could have been avoided if they had made it clear (on a message, preferably using just one platform where google translate could have been used) to let us know the proper procedure. It was no use to keep "telephone... telephone... telephone" (the words used by the owner, the next morning at the restaurant, when it felt like we were getting a 'telling off') if we didn't understand each others language?! This didn't spoil our stay but its never happened in any other place that we've visited and it looks like it isn't the first time it's happened here. If we were told in advance to go to the restaurant for check in, we would have gone...

    Very nice, well located appartment

Liked: Great location, nice appartment and Roberto was very friendly welcoming us. His restaurant was very good too!

Disliked: A few minor tweaks could improve the appartment - towel hooks in the bathroom, some new pillows on the bed and it would be great if there was some coffee left to use with the filter when you arrive.
