Where to stay on the Lisbon coast
What the Lisbon coast is like
Around Lisbon there are several different coasts: Cascais and Estoril, with a seafront promenade and small beaches at the mouth of the Tagus; the Atlantic coast of Sintra, with cliffs and Cabo da Roca; Caparica, across the river, with miles of sand; and Sesimbra, next to the Arrábida hills. The Atlantic water is cold even in summer.
Which area to choose
Cascais and Estoril have the most hotels and are well connected with Lisbon, so they work for combining beach and city. Sintra is better for the palaces and the hills than for the beach. Ericeira, to the north, is a fishing village with a big surf scene. Caparica and Sesimbra are the beach options south of the Tagus, with apartments and simpler hotels.
When to go
June to September is beach season, and in August the weekends fill up with people from Lisbon. Spring and autumn are good for Sintra and for walking along the coast. Surfing in Ericeira is best in autumn and winter, when the waves are bigger.
Getting around
Trains run from Lisbon (Cais do Sodré) to Cascais and Estoril along the coast, and from Lisbon (Rossio) to Sintra. To Caparica you go by bus, or by boat across the Tagus and then by bus. For Ericeira and Sesimbra, a car or the bus is most practical.
