Where to stay in Sintra: the best areas

Historic centre

The centre of Sintra, the Vila, surrounds the National Palace, and its cobbled streets climb towards the hills. From here you can walk to the Quinta da Regaleira, and buses leave for Pena and the Moorish Castle. At night, once the day visitors have gone, it is calm again.

Places to stay tend to be small, in old houses, and parking is difficult: if you come by car, check beforehand whether there is a space.

Best-rated in this area: Chalet Saudade, with a score of 9.4 from 3,076 reviews.

EstefΓ’nia and the station

Around the railway station, about ten minutes' walk from the centre, the EstefΓ’nia district has simpler places to stay, everyday restaurants and the convenience of the train to Lisbon on the doorstep. It is a good base if you don't have a car.

The hills and the quintas

On the slopes of the hills, on the way to Monserrate or Colares, there are historic quintas and country houses turned into places to stay, with gardens, mist and silence. They suit those who want to switch off and have a car, as public transport here is limited.

Towards the sea: Colares and the coast

To the west, the municipality reaches the Atlantic, with villages such as Azenhas do Mar and beaches such as Praia Grande and Praia das Maçãs. Staying around here combines palaces in the morning and the sea in the afternoon, always with a car and knowing that the water is cold and the wind frequent.
