Baixa and Chiado

The Baixa is the grid of straight streets running down to the Praça do Comércio. It is the flattest part of the centre and the best connected: metro, trams and Rossio station for the train to Sintra. The Chiado, just above, adds bookshops, historic cafés and theatres, and links the Baixa with the Bairro Alto.

It is the most convenient option if you are coming for a few days and want to do everything on foot. Traffic and crowds are noticeable on the main streets; the side streets are quieter.

Best-rated in this area: Solar dos Poetas, with a score of 9.0 from 7,996 reviews.

Alfama and the castle

Alfama is a maze of alleys, steps and low houses between the cathedral and SΓ£o Jorge Castle. There are fado houses, viewpoints over the river and small places to stay in old buildings. On the other hand, the hills are steep and taxis cannot reach every door, so it is best to travel light.

Best-rated in this area: Varandas de Lisboa - Tejo River Apartments & Rooms, with a score of 9.2 from 3,243 reviews.

Bairro Alto and PrΓncipe Real

The Bairro Alto is the nightlife district: quiet by day, its streets fill with people until late at night. If you want to sleep without noise, neighbouring PrΓncipe Real, with its garden, design shops and grand houses, is a few minutes' walk away.

Best-rated in this area: Chiado Arty Flats, with a score of 9.8 from 4,227 reviews.

Avenida da Liberdade and BelΓ©m

The Avenida da Liberdade, the great boulevard that rises from Restauradores, has larger hotels, good metro connections and easy access by car. BelΓ©m, by the river and about twenty minutes from the centre by tram, is a quiet alternative for those who prefer walks by the water and don't mind travelling in.

Best-rated in this area: Room Lisboa, with a score of 8.2 from 20,000 reviews.
