Coimbra and Aveiro
Coimbra has one of the oldest universities in Europe and a hilly centre by the Mondego river. Aveiro, with its canals and moliceiro boats, is close to the beaches of Costa Nova. Both are on the railway line between Lisbon and Porto.
Silver Coast
Nazaré, famous for its giant winter waves, Peniche and Óbidos, a walled town, combine well on a coastal route.
Serra da Estrela
The Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal, with villages of schist and granite and rural places to stay. It can snow in winter, and there is a small ski resort.
