Lisbon
In Lisbon, the Baixa and the Chiado are the most practical centre; Alfama has the feel of an old neighbourhood and its fado houses, but lots of hills; the Avenida da Liberdade has the big hotels. Belém, further out, has the monuments of the Age of Discovery.
Sintra, Cascais and the coast
Sintra, with its palaces among the woods, and Cascais, with beaches and the feel of a summer resort, are less than an hour away by train: you can visit them for the day or stay the night. South of the Tagus, the Setúbal peninsula has the Arrábida hills and quiet beaches.
Tagus Valley
Santarém and Tomar, with the Templars' Convent of Christ, are historic inland towns, good for a road trip with rural places to stay and quintas. Fátima, in the same district, receives many pilgrimages and has a large choice of hotels.
