  Lively, inspiring, rejuvenating – even if only for a few days

  Liked: It cannot be stressed enough how central – and, as we felt, simply the perfect spot in Funchal for a holiday – Sao Thiago House is. The neighbourhood and the people living and working there are delightful, and staying here lets you become part of everyday life very quickly, if you're open to it. At the same time, almost unbelievably, everything you could possibly need – a parking spot, supermarkets or a smorgasbord of restaurants – is just a few minutes' walk away or, like the beautiful coastline, right on your doorstep. There is music in the street, which we enjoyed every time we had the chance to hear it. Inside, the house is very quiet compared to everything happening right in front of the door, and the bit of atmosphere that still reached us felt very comforting. The one-room house has been renovated into a modern flat that is perfectly suited to a couple like us. A charming surprise: a spiral staircase and a small skylight lead up to a cosy little rooftop balcony, right on top of the newly built bathroom. Smart architecture, and our favourite breakfast spot. One highlight for us was listening to what seems to be the local parrot whistling its cartoonishly hilarious sounds while we had breakfast up there.

  Disliked: Honestly, nothing. Sao Thiago House and our contact with the owners left nothing to be desired – I couldn't complain even if I wanted to.

  Great location and space for a week in Funchal

  Liked: Great location in the heart of the old town with plenty of restaurants and bars on the doorstep and a fantastic use of space. We liked the little roof terrace.

  Disliked: Some of the facilities were a little tired and worn.

  Excellent stay in the heart of the old town

  Liked: The location is absolutely perfect, right in the heart of the old town. Check in and check out were easy.

  Disliked: Our stay was great but there is a bit of noise from the street until.about midnight most nights as the location is so central. We did not mind though.
