What the Costa Dorada is like
The Costa Dorada, or Costa Daurada in Catalan, is the coastline of Tarragona, with long beaches of fine sand and shallow water. It has PortAventura World, Roman Tarragona, a World Heritage Site, and the wineries of the Priorat and the Penedès less than an hour away.
Which town to choose
Salou is the resort centre, with hundreds of hotels next to PortAventura. Cambrils is quieter and known for its harbour and seafood, Tarragona combines city and beach, and Torredembarra and Calafell have family beaches further north.
When to go
July and August are the busiest months, and PortAventura’s Halloween and Christmas seasons also push up prices in Salou.
Getting around
Reus airport is about 15 minutes from Salou and Barcelona airport an hour away. There’s a coastal railway and frequent buses between Salou, Cambrils and Tarragona.
