What the Empordà is like
It’s the plain in north-east Girona, between the Pyrenees and the sea. The Alt Empordà has Figueres, Cap de Creus and Cadaqués; the Baix Empordà, medieval villages such as Peratallada and Pals and the coves of Begur and Calella de Palafrugell.
Which area to choose
The inland villages have charming farmhouses and rural hotels, many with pools. On the coast, Begur and Calella de Palafrugell have small hotels above the coves, and Roses and Cadaqués more beach choice. Figueres is practical if you arrive by train.
When to go
July and August are the most expensive and crowded months on the coast. Spring and September have good weather and fewer people, and in winter the tramontana wind often blows.
Getting around
The high-speed train stops at Figueres-Vilafant and Girona airport is less than an hour away. To get from village to village you need a car, because buses are few.
