Calella and Port Bo

The village huddles around small coves such as Port Bo, Canadell and Port de Malaespina. Les Voltes, the white arcades facing the sea, house restaurants with tables almost on the sand. If you stay here, you walk down for a swim without the car and dine beside the boats pulled up on the beach.

The streets are narrow and steep, and parking is scarce in summer. It suits couples and anyone wanting to experience seafaring life first-hand.

Cap Roig and the upper village

To the south, the village climbs towards the Cap Roig botanical garden, with its castle and sea views. This part is mostly villas and apartments with gardens, on quieter streets. It suits families or anyone looking for space and silence, although there are slopes on the way down to the beach.

Llafranc

A stroll along the coastal path takes you to Llafranc, with a sandy bay and a small marina. Its promenade has terraces and ice-cream parlours, and the sheltered water is easy for children. Above it, a road climbs to the Sant Sebastià lighthouse, one of the widest viewpoints on this stretch of coast.

Tamariu

Further north, Tamariu is a small village tucked among pines, with a single beach and few streets. It has less accommodation and less bustle, ideal for switching off and snorkelling in clear water. Its promenade has a handful of restaurants with terraces by the water, and another stretch of the coastal path leads from here to the lighthouse.

Palafrugell

The inland town has the shops, the market and the bus station with connections to Girona and Barcelona. From there you go down to the coves by car or bus, and it is usually easier to find a room in high season. In the centre is the Cork Museum, recalling the industry that made the town grow.
