Old town and the castle

The centre of Begur surrounds the castle hill, with its watchtowers and the colonial façades of the indianos. If you stay here, you eat on the terraces of the square and walk up to the ruins to watch the Empordà at sunset. It is the liveliest area of the municipality at night.

The coves are down below, along winding roads, so you will need a car to get to the beach.

Best-rated in this area: Alta House Begur, with a score of 9.4 from 1,167 reviews.

Sa Riera and Racó beach

Sa Riera is Begur’s widest cove, with sand and fishing boats. To the north it joins Racó beach, and in the municipality of Pals it continues as the long sandy beach of the same name. It is the favourite area for families with young children, because there are bars, boat hire and shallow water at the shore. In high season the car park by the sand fills up early.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Ses Negres, with a score of 9.1 from 1,316 reviews.

Sa Tuna and Aiguafreda

These two small coves, among pines and rock, keep the air of a fishing village. There are few houses and the odd place to stay. The coastal path runs between them, so you can walk from one to the other. Ideal for couples looking for peace and snorkelling.

Best-rated in this area: Can Estrellas apartamento vista mar, with a score of 9.5 from 42 reviews.

Aiguablava and Fornells

To the south, Aiguablava cove has turquoise water and fine sand. The small bay of Fornells, next to it, is surrounded by villas and small jetties. The area is residential and elegant, with fewer bars than the village. It suits anyone who wants to go down for a swim from their room and have a relaxed dinner.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Aiguablava, with a score of 9.0 from 92 reviews.

Esclanyà

Esclanyà is an old farming village in the municipality, inland, with its medieval castle. It is quieter and close to Pals and Peratallada. It is an alternative in July and August, when the centre fills up, and has quick access to the road to Palafrugell.
