Centre and the Citadel

The centre of Roses stretches between the fishing port and the Ciutadella, the large fortified enclosure that holds Greek, Roman and medieval remains. The promenade runs along the town beach, with terraces and fish restaurants, and behind it are the shopping streets of the old town. Boats along the Cap de Creus coast leave from here, as do buses to Figueres and Cadaqués. It is the area for doing everything on foot, with the beach, the market and dinner a few steps away.

Santa Margarida

West of the centre, Santa Margarida is a flat development with navigable canals, many houses with their own mooring and apartments. Its beach is long and sandy, with a pleasant promenade for walking or cycling to the centre. There are supermarkets and seasonal restaurants. It appeals to families and anyone travelling by boat. The inner streets are residential and there is hardly any noise at night.

Canyelles, La Almadrava and Puig Rom

To the east, the road leaves town between hills and passes the castle of La Trinitat, a fortress above the sea. Then come the coves of Canyelles Petites and La Almadrava, with clean water and a quieter feel. On the slopes of Puig Rom there are houses with views over the whole bay and the remains of a Visigothic settlement. You need a car, but you gain nearby coves and less noise. This same road leads to the paths towards Cap Norfeu.

Empuriabrava

Across the bay, Empuriabrava belongs to Castelló d’Empúries and is a large residential marina with kilometres of canals. It has a wide beach, lots of apartments and nightlife in summer.
