La Rambla and the Dalí Theatre-Museum

The heart of Figueres fits into a few streets. Between the Rambla, Plaça de l’Ajuntament and Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí you have the museum, the terraces and traditional shops. Here you sleep a stroll from the Empordà Museum and the Toy Museum, and can enter the Theatre-Museum first thing, before the groups arrive. Sant Ferran castle occupies the hill to the north-west, an uphill walk from here.

It is the best area if you are coming for a day or two and want to do everything on foot. At night, life concentrates on the Rambla and the surrounding streets.

Around the train station

The commuter and regional train station is on the east side, by Plaça de l’Estació, and you can walk to the centre from it. It suits you if you will be connecting with Girona, Portbou or Barcelona by regional train, or want to set off early on a bus trip to the coast. The streets on this side are residential and commercial, with fewer visitors than the Rambla.

Vilafant and the high-speed station

To the west, in the municipality of Vilafant, is the Figueres-Vilafant high-speed station. It is a newer, more residential area with quick access to the AP-7 motorway. It suits you if you are driving around the Empordà or arriving by fast train from Barcelona or France and continuing the next day. The N-260 road towards Besalú and Olot also leaves from this side.

Vilabertran and Llers

If you prefer the countryside, small villages are very close. Vilabertran keeps the Romanesque canonry of Santa Maria, with its cloister and bell tower. Llers, on a rise to the north-west, has the ruins of its castle and views over the Alt Empordà plain. There are rural houses and quiet places to stay, but you will need a car for everything, including going down to Figueres for dinner.
