Where to stay on the Mar Menor and La Manga

What the Mar Menor is like

The Mar Menor is a saltwater lagoon of about 170 km², separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga, a 21 km strip of sand. Its waters are shallow and warm, good for families and water sports, and the mud baths of Lo Pagán are famous.

Which town to choose

La Manga has the big hotels, with beaches on both seas. San Pedro del Pinatar, with its salt flats and Lo Pagán, and Los Alcázares, with wooden bathing piers over the water, are quieter and more family-oriented.

When to go

In July and August it fills with families, mostly from Murcia and Madrid. In spring and autumn the weather is mild and prices drop a lot.

Getting around

Región de Murcia airport, at Corvera, is about 30 minutes away by car, and Alicante airport an hour. To get between the towns and to the far end of La Manga, a car is best.
