Where to stay in La Manga del Mar Menor: the best areas
Cabo de Palos
At the entrance to La Manga, Cabo de Palos keeps its fishing-village feel, with the lighthouse on the cape, the harbour and a row of restaurants serving rice dishes and fish by the sea. Its marine reserve, which includes the Hormigas islands, draws divers from all over Spain.
It suits those who prefer a village atmosphere and want to head to Cartagena or Calblanque without depending on La Manga’s single road.
Southern La Manga
The first kilometres of La Manga, in the municipalities of San Javier and Cartagena, have supermarkets, restaurants and apartment towers. You have the Mar Menor on one side, with warm, shallow water for young children, and the Mediterranean on the other, with more surf. From here you soon reach Calblanque regional park, with unspoilt beaches surrounded by dunes.
El Estacio and Tomás Maestre
In the central part, the Estacio channel links the two seas and holds the Tomás Maestre marina. It is the area for those coming to sail, dinghy or windsurf on the Mar Menor, and it is lively around the marina in summer. Nearby there are stretches of beach on both sides where the Mar Menor is almost always calm. Most accommodation is apartments, comfortable for stays of a week or more.
Northern La Manga and Veneziola
Towards the northern tip, around Veneziola, La Manga narrows and the pace slows. There are fewer buildings, wider beaches and views over the Encañizadas, beside the San Pedro del Pinatar salt pans. It is the choice of couples and families wanting to switch off. In return, services are scarcer and any outing means driving along the Gran Vía.
