What the Sierra de Guadarrama is like
It’s the mountain range separating Madrid from Segovia, protected as a national park since 2013. It has peaks over 2,000 metres, such as Peñalara, pine forests, glacial lakes and passes such as Navacerrada and Cotos.
Which village to choose
On the Madrid side, Cercedilla and Guadarrama are next to the passes and have trains. Rascafría, Manzanares el Real and Miraflores have rural houses and small hotels. On the Segovia side, La Granja and Segovia itself have more choice and monuments.
When to go
In winter there’s snow on the passes and weekends get busy. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking, and in summer the cool air is welcome.
Getting around
Local trains reach Cercedilla, and from there the Navacerrada train climbs to Cotos in season. There are buses from Madrid to Segovia and the villages, but a car makes the routes easier.
