Plaza Mayor and the cathedral

On a first visit, look for a place at the top of the old town, around the Plaza Mayor. The cathedral is on one side and the Alcázar is at the end of a short walk along Calle Daoíz and Calle Marqués del Arco. At night the area goes quiet, which is welcome after a day of sightseeing.

The streets of the old Jewish quarter are very close, heading down towards the southern wall. It is a peaceful corner with good views over the valley.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Cetina Palacio Ayala Berganza, with a score of 9.4 from 4,878 reviews.

El Azoguejo and Calle Real

Sleeping next to the aqueduct has a clear advantage: you see it by day and by night, when it is lit up. From Plaza del Azoguejo, Calle Real climbs up to the Plaza Mayor past shops, terraces and the Casa de los Picos. Some of the best-known restaurants for roast suckling pig are here. The bus station is close by, making it a convenient base if you come from Madrid without a car.

San Millán and El Salvador

These neighbourhoods, outside the walls but right next to the centre, have a more local feel. The Romanesque church of San Millán is one of the most beautiful in the city. Parking is usually easier than inside the walls, and you can still walk to the aqueduct in a few minutes.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Cetina Palacio Ayala Berganza, with a score of 9.4 from 4,878 reviews.

San Marcos and the Eresma valley

At the foot of the Alcázar, by the river, is the San Marcos quarter. It is the option for peace and nature: the Vera Cruz church, El Parral monastery and the Eresma riverside walk are close by, and this is where you get the best photos of the Alcázar. Bear in mind that the way back to the centre is uphill.

If you arrive by high-speed train, remember that Segovia-Guiomar station is on the outskirts. It is best to stay in the centre and make that trip by bus or taxi.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Don Felipe, with a score of 9.0 from 6,229 reviews.
