Old town below the castle

Arnedo’s old streets climb towards the hill where the remains of the fortress stand. You stay near the churches of Santo Tomás and Santa Eulalia and the bars for vermouth and tapas. From here you walk up to the castle viewpoint and see the whole valley, with clay slopes full of caves. The slopes are moderate and the old town is compact, so everything is close.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Virrey, with a score of 7.9 from 281 reviews.

Shopping centre and the shoe-shop streets

Around the old town spreads the flattest part of the city, with the shoe shops, supermarkets and many of the restaurants. If you are coming to buy shoes or for a city weekend, this area keeps everything at hand. It is also easier for parking, as the streets are wider than in the upper part.

The Vico monastery is a short trip from the centre, as is the Cueva de los Cien Pilares.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Virrey, with a score of 7.9 from 281 reviews.

Arnedillo and the upper Cidacos valley

Upriver, Arnedillo brings together the spa and hot-water pools on the bank of the Cidacos. It is the place to sleep if you are after rest, hot baths and hill walks. The area has vulture colonies and viewpoints for birdwatching. Higher up, Enciso is home to the dinosaur footprint sites, so families with children find a perfect plan here.

Quel and Autol

Down the valley, towards Calahorra, are Quel and Autol. Autol is known for the Picuezo and the Picueza, two rock pinnacles visible from the road. Both villages have a quiet feel, market gardens and rural cottages. They are an alternative if you want to drive around La Rioja Baja and compare the Cidacos landscape with that of the Ebro. From Autol you also quickly reach Calahorra, with its cathedral and Roman past.
