Old Town and the cathedral

The old town occupies the hill running down to the river Cidacos. Below, by the water, is the cathedral of Santa María. Up top are the churches of San Andrés and Santiago and the streets of the old Jewish quarter. Sleeping here puts the monuments on your doorstep and gives very calm nights.

Bear in mind there are slopes and narrow streets. If you have large suitcases or a car, check access before booking.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Calahorra, with a score of 8.6 from 1,450 reviews.

Paseo del Mercadal and the centre

El Mercadal is Calahorra’s great promenade and the point where old and new town meet. Around it are shops, terraces and many of the restaurants where you can try vegetables from the Rioja market gardens. From here it is a short walk up to the old town and to the Museum of Romanisation.

It is the liveliest area at any hour and the best choice if you are coming to eat well and see the city without moving the car.

Best-rated in this area: Parador de Calahorra, with a score of 8.6 from 1,450 reviews.

The station and the Ensanche

Calahorra has a station on the line between Logroño and Zaragoza. The surrounding Ensanche streets are more modern, with apartment blocks, supermarkets and neighbourhood bars. It suits those arriving without a car or leaving early for Logroño or Tudela. The centre is an easy walk away.

Roads to the AP-68 and N-232

On the outskirts, by the road access points, there are places to stay with their own parking and direct motorway access. They are the option for those passing through the Ebro valley or touring the area. From here it is easy to head for the Bardenas Reales, the wineries of the Rioja Oriental or the Cidacos and Alhama valleys, on the way to Enciso. In return, you will have to drive or take a long walk to the old town.
