Where to stay in Nájera: the best areas

Old quarter and Santa María la Real

Nájera's old town is squeezed between the left bank of the Najerilla and red clay cliffs riddled with caves. Here are the monastery of Santa María la Real, with its royal pantheon and the Knights' Cloister, and the streets the Camino de Santiago passes along.

Staying in this area lets you see the monastery first thing, dine in the bars of the centre and walk by the river at sunset. It suits you if you are travelling without a car or walking the Camino.

Best-rated in this area: Hostal Hispano, with a score of 8.1 from 2,241 reviews.

Right bank of the Najerilla

Across the bridge lies the more modern part, with shops, supermarkets and wider streets. Here it is easy to leave the car and walk across to the old town in a few minutes. It is a convenient choice for families and for those arriving by car who want to tour Rioja Alta over several days. The everyday shops are here too, useful on longer stays.

Tricio and Uruñuela

Very close by, Tricio has the basilica of Santa María de los Arcos, built over Roman remains and with reused ancient columns. Uruñuela is surrounded by vineyards and Rioja wineries. Both villages are quiet and have the odd rural house. They suit you if your trip revolves around wine and you prefer to sleep among the fields. Many local wineries open their cellars to visits by appointment.

Azofra, on the Camino

Azofra is the next village after Nájera on the Way of St James towards Santo Domingo de la Calzada. It is small, with a pilgrim atmosphere and few services. It suits those who want to get away from traffic and do not mind driving a few minutes to dinner. From here the monasteries of Suso and Yuso, in San Millán de la Cogolla, are also close.
