Where to stay in Fitero: the best areas
The Baños de Fitero
On the outskirts, following the Alhama river west, is the Baños de Fitero complex. It is why most travellers come here: the water rises hot from the spring, and the accommodation in this area has thermal pools, circuits and treatments in the building itself. Staying next to the spa lets you go down in your bathrobe first thing and forget the car for your stay.
The setting is a narrow valley, with market gardens and dry hills around. There is no nightlife or shops, so arrive with what you need or go up to the village for it.
Village and monastery
The village revolves around the Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real, with its church and cloister. Around it are streets with bars, a bakery, a pharmacy and the odd restaurant serving Ribera food, with garden vegetables and lamb. Staying in the village makes sense if you combine a day or two at the spa with trips around the area, or if you prefer to pay just for the spa session and sleep in a rural house. To get to the Baños you need a car or a long walk by the river.
Cintruénigo and the nearby Ribera
Down the valley, Cintruénigo and Corella are larger towns, with more services and Navarra wineries. In the other direction, in La Rioja, Cervera del Río Alhama is upstream on the same river. Staying in one of these towns suits you if you are touring the area by car, for example towards the Bardenas Reales or Tudela, and treat the spa as a half-day outing. You will find more bars, shops and petrol stations than in Fitero, and a range of prices in rural houses and guesthouses.
