Disappointed, puzzled how this hotel gained four stars

Liked: How can this hotel be four stars? It’s not even a 2. Rooms dated, bathroom had mildew on the tiles, dirt in the cupboard, furniture tired and needing replaced, windows filthy. See photos. And it cost a fortune. Definitely gone down hill from how it used to be.

Disliked: We felt ripped off, paid a fortune for somewhere that felt neglected, down at heel and in need of a good clean.

    Moorings hotel on last legs

Liked: Nothing to like about the Moorings Hotel.

Disliked: Greeted by the lovely aroma of mustiness! Reception closed until 7am, the told to go to bar then back to restaurant to register. Hotel staff have no clue. A very large man entered our room without knocking, a bit scary! Didn't dare eat there as the cleanliness of the hotel could have been replicated in the kitchen. Hotel in very much need of an upgrade.

Excellent. I can't really add anything else

Liked: The hotel is excellent and the staff are very friendly. What makes it extra special is that they remember your name which makes you feel 'at home'. and you start to speak to them as if you have known them for a while. I booked for 4 nights and extended this by a further 3. The location of the hotel is one of its strong points. You can easily walk to Fort William and hike part of the West Highland Way up the Caledonian Canal. I walked all the way to Achnacarry and the Clan Cameron museum, but it's great for touring also. If you're a Harry Potter fan, the steam train passes multiple times a day (when in season) but personally to me it will always be The Jacobite. I have stayed a numerous 'highland' hotels and all feel 'tired' in some respects, it's the nature of the business and the climate they operate in. However, The Moorings Hotel doesn't feel tired. The breakfast is great and has a decent selection and the evening meals are worth the money and plentiful - definitely try the the Sticky toffee pudding. I will have no hesitation in staying here again and as mentioned before it really is now my 'go to' hotel when in the Highlands. I have had numerous rooms over the years and all are fine.

Disliked: The top car park is easily filled especially when vans use them. Obviously these spaces are are fist come first served but to me, it would make sense for any larger vehicles to use the lower car park.
