Great character, central location, lovely breakfast and a memorable wine cellar experience

Liked: The hotel is in an excellent location in the heart of Florence, within easy walking distance of the main attractions and the railway station. Despite being so central, our room was quiet, which we really appreciated during our three-night stay. The hotel has plenty of character, and the reception staff were consistently pleasant, friendly and welcoming. It was also convenient to be able to leave our bags at the hotel if our room was not yet ready. We booked a Deluxe room, which was well appointed and comfortable. Breakfast was included and offered a great variety of options. One of the highlights of our stay was the hotel's 14th-century wine cellar experience, which we would highly recommend, particularly for wine lovers. We enjoyed this with friends and spent several hours sampling the wines and sharing the generous food platters, which were far more plentiful than we could possibly finish! The tasting was also much more generous than we expected, with four bottles of wine rather than just four glasses. It was a fun and memorable experience.

Disliked: While our Deluxe room was well appointed, some of the other rooms appeared considerably smaller. The shared areas on the room floors were also in need of refurbishment, particularly the carpets, which were in poor condition and visibly patched. Fortunately, the hotel has a lift, which is a welcome convenience in Italy, where lifts are not always available in older buildings. However, this one was exceptionally slow and could accommodate a maximum of four people, so there may be some waiting during busy periods. We found the hotel a little expensive, although this was probably in keeping with accommodation prices in such a central location in Florence. One other point is the hotel reception toilet - enter at your own risk! Both my friend and I got locked in that toilet. The locking mechanism is clunky and staff had to let me out by inserting a key from the outside. If you do happen to be locked in, it's hard for people outsie to hear to calling out for assistance.
