Where to stay in Florence: the best areas
Duomo and Signoria
In the historic centre, between the cathedral and Piazza della Signoria, there are hotels in old palazzi, guesthouses and apartments. The Uffizi, the Ponte Vecchio and the Accademia are a few minutes' walk away, although the streets are packed with visitors during the day.
Santa Maria Novella
Around the station and the basilica of Santa Maria Novella there are hotels of every category. It is the most practical area if you are taking day trips around Tuscany by train or bus, and the Duomo is a short walk away.
Oltrarno
Across the Arno, between the Pitti Palace and the San Frediano district, there are apartments and small hotels in a more neighbourhood feel. It has craft workshops, squares with terraces and good trattorias, and you cross to the centre over the Ponte Vecchio.
Santa Croce
The Santa Croce district, east of the centre, mixes small hotels, apartments and local life around its basilica and the Sant'Ambrogio market. It is lively at night and within walking distance of Piazza della Signoria.
