Where to stay in the Balearic Islands
Majorca
In Majorca it pays to choose an area to suit your trip. Palma has city hotels in the old town and along the seafront. The north (Pollença, Alcúdia) has long, shallow beaches that are good for families. The Serra de Tramuntana (Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa) has boutique hotels among the mountains. The east, with Cala d'Or and Cala Millor, mixes coves with large holiday resorts.
Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera
Menorca is quieter and has unspoilt coves; Ciutadella and Mahón are the main bases. In Ibiza, Ibiza Town and Sant Antoni are the centres of nightlife, while Santa Eulària and the north are more family-friendly. Formentera has no airport and is reached by boat from Ibiza; its beaches have remarkably clear water.
When to go
The season runs from May to October, and July and August need booking well in advance. Out of season many coastal hotels close, especially in Menorca and Formentera, but Palma stays open all year.
