Where to stay in Menorca: the best areas

MahΓ³n and Es Castell

MahΓ³n (MaΓ³) looks out over one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. It is the choice if you want a town atmosphere, restaurants by the port and easy access from the airport or the ferry. Close by are Illa del Rei and La Mola fortress at the harbour mouth. Next door is Es Castell, a small, quiet town with the Cales Fonts cove, lined with waterside terraces.

To the south are Binibeca Vell, with its white houses, and Punta Prima beach.

Ciutadella and its coast

At the other end of the island, Ciutadella has an old town of narrow streets and palaces, with the cathedral, Plaça des Born and a narrow harbour full of restaurants. It is the ideal base for the unspoilt coves of the south, such as Macarella, Turqueta and Son Saura. Nearby resorts such as Cala en Blanes and Cala en Bosc are very practical for families.

Son Bou and Cala Galdana

On the south coast, Son Bou has the longest beach on the island, with fine sand and shallow water. Cala Galdana, further west, is a wide cove surrounded by pine trees, with facilities and walks. Both are easy with children if you want the beach on your doorstep. Sant TomΓ s, between the two, is another quiet option. Stretches of the CamΓ de Cavalls, the path that circles the island, run along this whole coast.

Fornells and the north

The north coast is wilder and less developed. Fornells, a fishing village on a large bay, is known for its lobster stew and its calm water for kayaking and sailing. From Es Mercadal, in the centre of the island, you can drive up Monte Toro, the highest point.

To get around Menorca, a car is the most practical option, especially if you want a different cove every day.
