Old town

The historic centre has the cathedral, the Almudaina palace, the Arab Baths and grand courtyards. Around the Passeig del Born and Plaza Mayor there are shops, cafΓ©s and restaurants. Staying here means you can see everything on foot and go out for dinner without thinking about transport. It is the best area for a city break or a first visit. Many streets are pedestrianised, so it is not ideal if you have a hire car.

Best-rated in this area: El Josemari Hostel, with a score of 8.7 from 7,206 reviews.

Santa Catalina and Es Jonquet

West of the centre, Santa Catalina is an old fishermen's quarter that now has much of Palma's food scene. Its market is a good place for breakfast or a drink. Next door, Es Jonquet keeps its old windmills above the Paseo MarΓtimo. It suits those who want evening atmosphere within walking distance of the old town.

Best-rated in this area: Protur Naisa Palma Hotel, with a score of 9.1 from 6,065 reviews.

Portixol and Es Molinar

To the east, following the seafront path, you reach Portixol and Es Molinar. These are neighbourhoods of low houses with a small harbour, terraces and a promenade popular with runners and cyclists. They suit anyone wanting peace, the sea and the centre within reach by bike or on foot along the coast.

Best-rated in this area: Portixol Hotel & Restaurant, with a score of 9.4 from 783 reviews.

Cala Major and Playa de Palma

If the beach is your priority, you have two options. To the west, Cala Major is a residential area with a town cove and the FundaciΓ³ MirΓ³. To the east, Playa de Palma, between Can Pastilla and S'Arenal, is a long stretch of sand near the airport, popular for sun-and-party holidays. City buses link both to the centre.

Best-rated in this area: Hotel Joan MirΓ³ Museum, with a score of 8.6 from 4,855 reviews.

Plaza de EspaΓ±a

This is the area around the main transport hub, where the SΓ³ller train and many buses to the rest of the island depart. It is convenient if you plan day trips without a car. The airport bus also stops here, and the old town is a short walk away.

Best-rated in this area: INNSiDE by MeliΓ‘ Palma Center, with a score of 8.8 from 3,778 reviews.
