Where to stay on the Antrim coast
What the Antrim coast is like
It is the north coast of Northern Ireland, between Belfast and Portrush. The coast road passes the Glens of Antrim, the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, the ruins of Dunluce Castle and the Giant’s Causeway, with its basalt columns.
Which town to choose
Bushmills, next to the Causeway and the distillery, is the closest base. Portrush and Portstewart have more hotels, beaches and restaurants. Belfast, an hour away, works if you prefer the city and see the coast on a day trip.
When to go
From May to September the days are long and more services are open; in summer the Causeway is crowded at midday, so go early or at sunset. Out of season the scenery is just as beautiful and there is more room.
Getting around
A car on the Causeway Coastal Route is best. There are summer buses between Belfast, Bushmills and Portrush, and plenty of day trips from Belfast and Dublin.
