Where to stay in the Cotswolds
What the Cotswolds are like
The Cotswolds are an area of gentle hills in south-central England, between Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon and Bath, protected as a National Landscape. Their villages were built from the local golden limestone on the profits of the wool trade, and many look much as they did four centuries ago.
Which village to choose
Bourton-on-the-Water, with its river and bridges, is the most visited and has the most places to stay. Chipping Campden and Broadway, in the north, are more refined and quieter. Stow-on-the-Wold sits in the middle, handy for getting around. Castle Combe, in the south, is tiny: most people stay in Bath or Chippenham and visit by day.
When to go
From May to September gardens are in bloom and pubs put their tables outside; on summer weekends Bourton fills with day-trippers. In autumn and at Christmas, with fires lit in the inns, there are fewer people and lower prices.
Getting around
Trains reach Moreton-in-Marsh and Kemble from London Paddington in just over an hour and a half. Buses between villages are few, so a car is easiest. The 164 km Cotswold Way footpath links Chipping Campden with Bath.
