What the Lake District is like
It is a national park in Cumbria, in north-west England, a World Heritage Site for its landscape of glacial lakes, bare fells and slate villages. The poet Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, author of Peter Rabbit, both lived here.
Which town to choose
Windermere and Bowness, on the largest lake, have the widest choice of hotels, boats and restaurants. Ambleside and Grasmere are smaller and suit walkers. Keswick, in the north, on Derwentwater, is the best base for fell walks.
When to go
From May to September the days are long and the boats run daily; July and August are the busiest months. In autumn the woods are beautiful. It rains often at any time of year: bring a waterproof.
Getting around
Trains reach Windermere from Oxenholme, on the London–Glasgow line. Inside the park there are buses and lake boats, but a car makes the valleys easier to reach. Manchester is the nearest major airport.
